US Bicycle Route System Gearing Up

Getoutdoors.com Outdoor Blog

My friends at EcoGeek reported on this story a couple weeks ago: Plans to construct an interstate bike system of bike paths are seeing signs of life after first gaining some headway in the cycle crazy 80's. Although only two stretches were established then, one form Virginia to North Carolina and one from Virginia to Illinois, (who knew Virginia was such a hot spot of long distance bicycling?), states are getting into the long-distance cycling game and the U.S. Department of Transportation is one board as well.

According to EcoGeek, the Association of American State Highway and Transportation Officials has already approved six new routes. Granted four of them will be in Alaska (again, who knew…although as a former Alaska resident, riding a bike through the state would probably be one of the best things ever), one will span Michigan's lower peninsula and one will go from New Hampshire to Maine. Another 15 are past the planning phase, with a whopping 42 states supporting the plan.

Check out the AASHTO map to stoke your long distance itch.
